Temperature Effects on Fuel Density
Aviation fuels expand when warmed and contract when cooled. Mass remains constant, but volume changes. The calculator automatically applies temperature correction using a thermal expansion coefficient of 0.095% per °C.
Important Notes
- All reference densities are standardized at 15°C (59°F)
- For accurate weight calculations, always use the actual fuel temperature
- Manual density override assumes the entered value is already at the specified temperature
- Temperature differences of ±20°C can result in ~2% density variation
Technical Details & Formulas
Unit Conversions:
• 1 US gal = 3.785411784 L
• 1 Imperial gal = 4.54609 L
• 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg
Temperature Correction:
• D(T) = D(15°C) / (1 + α × (T - 15))
• Where α = 0.00095 per °C (thermal expansion coefficient)
• T = actual fuel temperature in °C
Weight Calculations:
• Weight (lb) = Volume (US gal) × Density (lbs/US gal)
• Weight (kg) = Volume (L) × Density (kg/L)
Volume from Weight:
• Volume (US gal) = Weight (lb) / Density (lbs/US gal)
• Volume (L) = Weight (kg) / Density (kg/L)
