The U.S. Air Force has reached a key milestone with the VC-25B Bridge aircraft, confirming that modification and flight testing are now complete.
The Boeing 747-8i, originally provided as a gift from the government of Qatar and accepted in 2025, was modified at L3Harris facilities in Texas. After a series of test flights from locations including Greenville and Waco, the aircraft has transitioned to maintenance for final painting in the distinctive red, white, gold and blue livery associated with presidential operations.
According to the May 1, 2026 announcement, the aircraft remains on schedule for delivery to the Presidential Airlift Group no later than summer 2026. This interim platform is intended to relieve pressure on the existing VC-25A fleet, whose heavy maintenance demands have grown more challenging, while the dedicated VC-25B replacement program has encountered repeated delays.
The current timeline projects the first of the new-build VC-25B aircraft in 2028, a date that reflects a one-year acceleration achieved through focused requirements stabilization. A dedicated task force initiated a rapid push on the Bridge program in February 2025, working in parallel to support the primary effort with Boeing.
Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink described the integration of the 747-8i as more than a temporary fix, noting it establishes foundational elements for training, supply chains and sustainment of a high-consequence fleet expected to serve for decades. Gen. Dale White, the direct reporting portfolio manager, highlighted the success of assigning clear accountability to a single leader while aligning all stakeholders around rapid delivery.
Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Ken Wilsbach reaffirmed the service's commitment to delivering a secure, resilient airborne command post capable of supporting the President under any conditions. The Bridge aircraft is expected to provide essential operational experience ahead of the full VC-25B fleet.
To build the necessary pilot proficiency and parts availability, the Air Force has utilized multiple additional 747-8 airframes. These include two former Lufthansa passenger aircraft purchased to serve as dedicated trainers and an organic spares pool, as well as a leased Atlas Air 747-8F employed for interim pilot qualification training between October 2025 and February 2026. Spotters noted these aircraft operating with callsigns traditionally associated with the 89th Airlift Wing.
L3Harris was selected for the complex modifications based on its established role providing secure communications across the executive airlift fleet and its experience customizing VIP aircraft. The service stated that specialists from multiple agencies applied rigorous protocols to inspect and secure the previously owned jet against potential technical risks.
While full details of the modifications have not been publicly released, the expedited timeline suggests prioritization of core capabilities required for safe and secure presidential support. The approach has been credited with demonstrating how focused execution can deliver results with operational urgency.
The VC-25B Bridge program ultimately supports continuity for one of the nation's most critical missions. By standing up this interim capability now, the Air Force is preparing the ecosystem that will sustain presidential airlift well into the future.
